This work is a visual meditation on a fragmented self and a lack of memory. Rakan Isbury uses a printed image of a woman’s head in sepia tones—a nod to bygone eras and the fragility of memory. Set on an upper torso, the image is disrupted by bold red-brown paint smears that evoke the visceral intensity of lived experience.
In a deliberate gesture, her face is emerging out of a solid blue background, inviting the viewer to question the boundaries between self and lack of memory. Through this collage, the artist explores how layers of struggles with recovery coalesce to form a narrative of resilience and transformation—a story told not only through what is visible but also through the spaces in between.
